Abstract:
The standard method of sound diffusion using a mixing desk is hampered when the number of faders exceeds the number of fingers with which to manipulate them. A real-time three-dimensional diffusion system is discussed which can diffuse two mono sound channels to a variable number of speakers by sensing the positions of custom built hand-held, light-emitting pens. It uses an Apple iSight camera connected to an Apple Macintosh computer running Max/MSP and Jitter. A system configured for eight speakers is successfully realised, and the potential for more complex systems is explored.
