Abstract: Sounds You Can Touch documents the interactive sound installation, Sounds of a Community (2001). Sounds recorded in a synagogue, the Woodstock Jewish Congregation, are played back in the synagogue sanctuary. The sounds, often digitally processed, are heard as a result of visitor interaction with sound sculptures, modeled upon traditional Jewish ritual objects. The manner of interaction draws upon familiar physical gestures associated with Jewish prayer and religious ritual. The range of interaction is determined through pre-composed structures and sounds. The goal is to create a vehicle by which visitors, using interactive electronic music technologies, may explore the nature of religious ritual and appreciate the musical qualities of sounds of an environment.
